You need to attend a citizenship ceremony if you're 18 or over and have successfully applied to become a British citizen.
You must attend a citizenship ceremony within 3 months of receiving your invitation from the Home Office.
A citizenship ceremony is the final stage in you Becoming a British citizen .
Getting a citizenship ceremony
You will receive an invitation letter/email to attend the ceremony from the Home Office.
We cannot go ahead with the ceremony if you do not not bring your invitation letter/email or a form of photographic ID when you attend the ceremony.

You can choose to attend a group ceremony at either Huddersfield or Dewsbury Town Hall.

You will receive confirmation of your ceremony booking from Kirklees Council within 7 to 10 days.
The confirmation will advise you of the date of the ceremony and what you can expect on the day.
If you are unable to attend your ceremony, please contact our office at your earliest convenience to reschedule. You have 3 months from the date on the invitation letter/email from the Home Office to reschedule the ceremony.
What to bring to the ceremony
You must bring:
- The Home Office invitation letter/email
- Your booking confirmation from Kirklees Council
- A form of photographic identification
Children receiving citizenship do not have to attend, but are encouraged to do so.
During the ceremony
You swear an oath of allegiance to His Majesty the King and pledge loyalty to the United Kingdom. (or an affirmation if you prefer not to swear by God) This means you promise to respect the rights, freedoms and laws of the UK.
The ceremony lasts for approximately 1 hour.
It is attended by a local dignitary to welcome you to the borough.
At the end of the ceremony you are presented with your certificate of British citizenship.
After the ceremony
Once you've got your certificate of British citizenship, send your biometric residence permit (BRP) back to the Home Office.
You must send your permit back within 5 working days of getting your certificate of British citizenship
Cut your biometric residence permit (BRP) into 4 pieces and put it in a windowless envelope. Include a note saying you're returning your permit because you've become a citizen. The note needs to include your name, date of birth and the document number (located on the front of the card).

You will be fined up to £1,000 if you don't return your permit in 5 days.
