Local Development Framework (LDF)
Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment
The Development, Planning and Information Team - July 2008
DPI@kirklees.gov.uk
As part of preparations for the Local Development Framework (LDF), Kirklees Council is carrying out a
Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA).
The SHLAA will inform the Council of potential sites for housing across the District. The Council will use
the information from the assessment to decide where to locate land for new housing, in the work it is
undertaking for the LDF.
The purpose of the SHLAA is to record and assess all potential housing sites across the District. There
will be an opportunity later in the LDF process for consultation on the role and designation of housing
sites through the Core Strategy and DPD2: Development and Open Space.
The SHLAA will be used to inform the Core Strategy on potential options to meet the housing targets set out
in the Regional Spatial Strategy. The site specific information will be used to support decision making on
allocation of sites for housing in DPD2. These decisions are part of the wider plan making process and will
not take place within the SHLAA process.
The Council is carrying out a Call for Sites as part
of the SHLAA process. The Call for Sites invites
people to suggest potential sites for housing within Kirklees. These sites will be assessed through the SHLAA
process.
The SHLAA is in the early stages of preparation and is due to be completed by the end of 2008. The
methodology the Council proposes to use for the SHLAA will be available to download in early August.
