Greenaway shadowing 2011
booksplus was involved in a second successful year of Greenaway Medal shadowing with Birkenshaw Middle School earlier this term. The reader development initiative included six Year 5 pupils, Birkenshaw Middle School LRC Manager, Karen McKirgan, and staff from Kirklees public library service. Most sessions were held off-site at Cleckheaton Library and allowed the group to engage in a variety of activities based on the eight short listed picture books. This culminated in a Year 5/6 assembly on 28 June, at which all group members received special certificates of merit. The Greenaway Medal-winning picture book was FaRTHER by Grahame Baker Smith; although the group favourite was Jim by Mini Grey. For more information on Carnegie/Greenaway shadowing, visit www.carnegiegreenaway.org.uk or contact alison.brumwell@kirklees.gov.uk.

Autumn term author visits 2011
booksplus is pleased to be working with two authors in the autumn term: David Gatward and Martyn Bedford will be touring schools across the authority. David, whose novel The Dead won the Leeds Book Award 2011 (14-16 category), will be embarking on a Leeds-Kirklees mini-tour that involves Birkenshaw Middle School, Whitcliffe Mount Specialist Business and Enterprise College and Batley Business and Enterprise College. Martyn Bedford, whose first YA novel, Flip, has been published to wide critical acclaim, will be visiting Kirklees middle and secondary schools, free of charge in the autumn term. Martyn, who also teaches English and Creative Writing at Leeds Trinity and All Saints College, is looking forward to meeting local pupils to talk about his career and the writing process. For more information, or to arrange for Martyn to visit your school next term, contact alison.brumwell@kirklees.gov.uk.

Kids Lit Quiz 2011
The Kids' Lit Quiz is an annual literature quiz for students aged 10 - 13 years. Quizzes are held in New Zealand, the UK, South Africa, Canada and China. Within the UK there are around 15 regional heats, followed by a national final for the winning teams of each region. The national champions compete in the World Final.

The Yorkshire Heat will again be hosted by booksplus and the Customer and Exchequer Service at Cleckheaton Town Hall on Friday, 11 November 2011. Wayne Mills will be back from New Zealand as quizmaster par excellence, with guest author Martyn Bedford on hand to meet pupils, sign books and present prizes. Will Roundhay School Technology and Language College repeat their success in 2009 and 2010 to become Yorkshire champions for a third successive year? Why not enter a team and find out? For more details, visit www.kidslitquiz.com/ or contact gina.ikin@kirklees.gov.uk.

Clarification about the book loans for the school library

Starting this year, we are unable to offer any new stand-alone requests for a book loan for the school library. However, we will continue to honour the status quo for existing book loans - both stand alone and as part of a subscription. We want to make sure we support the needs of each particular school. If you need to discuss this further please contact Kathryn Taylor on 01484 226376
