The iconic Pioneer House will be at the heart of a new Learning Quarter to be developed in Dewsbury town centre. Kirklees College will lease 3,600 sq m in the Grade II Listed buildings which will become the Pioneer Centre for higher level skills, apprenticeships and post-19 studies, specialising in creative and digital media and art, healthcare, business and finance, and construction for 1,000 students.
The College will create the Springfield Centre nearby in a new 4,500 sq m building on part of the former Safeway supermarket site on Bradford Road. Accommodating around 1,600 mainly daytime students aged 16 -18, it will include specialist areas for foundation learning in construction and motor vehicle courses.
Planning permission has been gained, disposal of the two sites agreed by Kirklees Council, and grant and loan support approved by West Yorkshire Combined Authority/Leeds City Region LEP, the Council and Heritage Lottery Fund. The new building is expected to be completed in early 2018, with students moving in to take advantage of the new facilities in Pioneer House by Autumn 2018.
