Civil ceremonies may only take place in register offices or premises approved by a local authority.
You can form your civil partnership without having a formal ceremony. Once you have entered notice and the 28 days have elapsed, you and your partner may simply sign the partnership schedule in the presence of two witnesses without any kind of ceremony or formalities. At that point you become legally recognized civil partners.
Civil partnership ceremonies
We recognize that some couples prefer to mark the occasion by having a partnership ceremony where family and friends can help celebrate your new legal union.
We provide a basic framework for the ceremony which allows you to include readings, poetry, music and personal vows of commitment of your own choice.
Any additions to the ceremony must be secular in nature, have no religious content or be extracted from any religious text or ceremonies.
The registrar performing the ceremony will announce you into the ceremony room, lead you through the ceremony and introduce your additions at the appropriate point of the ceremony.
When the ceremony has ended you will be given some time to take photographs in the ceremony room before the registrar asks you to lead the way from the room and your guests to follow.
