An extensive programme of environmental education projects targeted at schools
is organised throughout Kirklees, for example "River of Life"
and "Tree of Life". These normally involve working with outside
agencies such as community arts groups and freelance ecologists to run themed
programmes of activities in schools.
Wildlife Watch Clubs for young people in the 8 to 14 year old age group
are supported in Marsden, Dalton and North Kirklees. Watch Clubs take part
in fun activities designed to help young people learn more about wildlife
and the countryside.
Enviroyouth is targeted at young people in the 14 plus age group and the
members play a key role in organising the group. Activities include conservation
projects, weekend residential projects in national parks and exchange visits
with environmental groups throughout Europe.
Environmental interpretation projects targeted at the wider public include
festivals linked to wildflower meadows created in urban areas. These include
cutting the meadow using traditional horse drawn machinery, watercolour
workshops, organic cookery demonstrations, craft activities for children
and live music.
