Which are Kirklees Council's
twin towns?
Kirklees is twinned with:
- Besancon, France (since 1955)
- Kreis Unna, Germany (since 1967)
- Kostanai, Kazakhstan (since 1989)
- Bielsko Biala, Poland (since 1992)
Can you provide information
on the twin towns?
Yes - We have publicity material available from all
the twin towns. If you have a specific query on one of the towns, please
email international@kirklees.gov.uk,
as we may well know the answer. If we don't, we are in regular contact with
our counterparts in the twin towns and will be happy to ask them on your
behalf.
Can you find a link
school in the twin towns?
Kirklees International Section regularly finds partner
schools abroad for schools within the Kirklees District. This
could be in order for the schools to develop an exchange or more simply
to bring an extra dimension to the language learning curriculum. You can
apply to link with a school in one of the twin towns by filling in the Link
Schools Form.
Can you find a pen
friend in the twin towns?
Although pupils from link schools often correspond
with each other as part of the link school arrangements, we are also able
to help find individual pen friends in the twin towns.

Can you arrange work
placements with the twin towns?
Each year the International Section help find work
placements for students with the twin towns who wish to add an international
element to their C.V. We are also able to arrange work placements in Kirklees
for students from the twin towns. The vast majority of work placements are
self financed by the students themselves, but they do find that the long
term benefits of work experience abroad stand them in good stead for the
future. Each year, two students from Kirklees spend a year working as English
Assistants in Kostanai.

Does Kirklees Council provide
funding for international activities?
Local groups organising reciprocal exchange visits
to Kirklees for visitors from the twin towns are eligible to apply for a
Twinning Grant of £25.00 per person, provided the guests are accommodated
on a homestay basis. Kirklees Council can not provide grants for groups
visiting the twin towns.

What are the twinning
activities with the Council's twin towns?
Originally, twinning links were set up in the aftermath
of two World Wars in order to foster international peace and understanding.
By the early 1990's, communities started to re-evaluate the content of their
twinning relationships and this period saw a noticeable trend towards the
economic and technical aspects of twinning of more multi-lateral relationships.
At this time, twinning links with Central and Eastern Europe began to increase.
Nowadays, twinning links have expanded and provide important educational,
cultural, sporting, economic and community links with our partners. Councils use
twinning links as a source of ideas to improve service delivery.
Would
the Council like to twin with... ?
Kirklees Council actively encourages local groups to
participate in the existing twinning links. Due to the pressure of resources,
Kirklees Council is unable to enter in to any more formal twinning arrangements.
However, if there is sufficient interest amongst local groups to twin with
a particular area, the International Section is happy to provide advice
and assistance in the formation of Community Twinning Associations. Recent
examples of this have included the Stocksmoor Community Association link
with Olgiate Molgora in Italy.

sources. We would be pleased to offer assistance.
