Which records are kept at
the Kirklees Register Offices?
Original registers of all births, deaths and marriages which happened in
Kirklees dating back to 1837.
How do I apply for a copy birth,
marriage or death certificate?
Complete an application
form and send it to the Register Office nearest to where the event happened.
What information do I
need to know to make an application?
You need to know at least the name of the person(s), the approximate date
of the birth, death or marriage within one year, and the place where the
event happened. Other details which are helpful are name of parent(s) for
birth records, or name of husband/wife for death records.
How much does a copy certificate
cost?
£7.00 sterling for standard birth, death and marriage certificates. £5.50 sterling for a short birth certificate. With effect from 6th April 2010 the cost of all certificates will be £9.00. Please enclose a cheque or money order made payable to 'Kirklees Council' with your application. You can also pay by a debit or credit card on phone..
Is there a search fee?
No, you only pay for copy certificates. You do not pay anything if the
Register Office cannot find a registration. We will return your cheque
if we are unable to provide a certificate.
How do I get access to my
Adoption Birth records?
Kirklees Family Placement Unit provides a counselling service and information
for people who have been adopted and who are applying for access to their
records.
You need to apply to the office for national statistics. The Local Authority
will forward you a booklet explaining how to do this. Click here to the
initial
contact form to request the booklet.
What is a Citizenship Ceremony?
1. A Citizenship Ceremony is the final stage in becoming a British Citizen. New citizens are required to swear an Oath of Allegiance
before the Superintendent Registrar at which time they will be given their certificate of naturalisation.
2. When the applicant has reached the appropriate place in the process, the Home Office will instruct them to contact their chosen
register office to make an appointment to swear the oath. At the same time, the Home Office sends the Certificate of Naturalisation to
the register office. Contact details of where to phone to make an appointment for a ceremony are provided by the Home Office.
3. In Kirklees, new citizens have a choice of attending either Huddersfield or Dewsbury register offices to swear the oath. They may
also choose between having a private, informal meeting with the Superintendent Registrar or they may choose a more formal group ceremony
where other new citizens and guests are also present.
