What is biodiversity and why is it important?
Biodiversity is a short hand term for biological diversity. Both terms are used to describe the whole variety of plant and animal life on earth.

In Kirklees, as across the UK, the numbers of species of plant and animal life are falling dramatically as we continue to lose semi-natural habitats on a huge scale.

If we don't act, many more of our once common and familiar species such as Water Voles, Great Crested Newts and Yellowhammers may not be able to recover from serious decline.

The Kirklees Local Biodiversity Action Plan, highlights actions needed to be taken to protect species and habitats within the Kirklees District.

Where can I find out more about biodiversity?
For more information about the Kirklees Local Biodiversity Action Plan or to get involved in practical work contact Jeff Keenlyside, the Biodiversity Co-ordinator, by phone on 01484 223482 or by email to jeff.keenlyside@kirklees.gov.uk.

For more information on the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, telephone the Biodiversity Policy Unit on 0117-3728974 or visit www.ukbap.org.uk.
