Do you think your property is in the wrong council tax band?

The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) is responsible for giving each home a property valuation band. We use this valuation band in part of our council tax calculation. The lower the band, the less council tax you usually have to pay.

If you think your property is in the wrong valuation band, you may be able to appeal against it with the Valuation Office Agency.

There are some companies currently advertising in our area offering to make an appeal on your behalf, but they will usually charge a fee, and/or a percentage of any refund you may receive.

If you want to make an appeal yourself, it's totally free of charge, and it's easier to do than you think. Before you decide to appeal you should know that there are limited circumstances when an appeal can be made, and the valuation band is based on 1991 market levels, not current house prices. Valuation bands can also increase, as well as decrease.

Full details of when, and how to appeal are on the Directgov website.

Even if you decide to appeal, you should continue to pay your council tax bill. If you are successful we will send you a new bill with a revised payment plan.
