How much do I owe?

You can check your council tax balance online using our council tax account enquiry service. To use this service you will need to have your council tax account number and your property reference to hand. You can find these on your council tax bill.

In certain circumstances, we may be able to include the amount you owe from a previous year with the instalments on your current account - provided we have not taken court action to recover it. Please contact us. If we can include your arrears, we will recalculate your instalment plan and send you a new bill.

I owe council tax from previous years. Is this included on my new bill?

Provided you have lived at the same address and your circumstances haven't changed, any amount you owe from previous years, that we have not taken court action to recover, will appear on your bill as a balance brought forward. However it will not be included in the instalment amounts on your annual bill. This is because you are expected to pay your arrears in full.

In certain circumstances, we may be able to include the amount you owe from a previous year with the instalments on your current account - provided we have not taken court action to recover it. Please contact us to discuss your situation. If we can include your arrears, we will recalculate your instalment plan and send you a new bill. If you have moved and still owe an amount at your old address, we will send you a separate bill. This bill will show you which address it relates to and will have a different account number.

Any previous arrears that have been subject to recovery action in court will be recovered separately to the amounts showing on your new bill. You should keep to any repayment arrangements you have previously agreed, as well as paying your new instalments for your ongoing account.

If you can't afford to pay your council tax you should contact us immediately.

Direct debit, the easiest way to pay

Over 75,000 council tax payers choose to pay by direct debit because:
  • It's quick and easy to set up
  • It's convenient, so you can get on with the things that matter to you.
  • There's no need for cheques or waiting in queues
  • It helps to make sure your bill is paid on time
With direct debit, we take the amount you need to pay directly from your bank or building society account.

We offer a choice of dates each month. Just select the date that best suits your budget. You can also spread your payments over 12 months (April to March) instead of 10 (April to January).

We will normally take your payments from your account on the same date of each month. If your due payment date falls at a weekend or bank holiday, we will normally take the money from your account just after that due date. If the amounts you need to pay or the payment date changes, we will notify you at least 10 working days in advance of the change.

To set up a direct debit If you already pay by direct debit, you do not need to reapply each year.

All banks and building societies that take part in the direct debit scheme offer the direct debit guarantee. The efficiency and security of the scheme is monitored and protected by your own bank or building society.

If we or your bank make an error, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund.

Can I change my payment due date?

Yes. We offer a variety of payment dates, depending on how you choose to pay, and you can also spread your payments over 12 months, rather than the usual 10.

It's simple to change your instalment date.

If you are not behind with your council tax you can rearrange your payment dates using our online request form.

If you are currently paying by direct debit and you want to change your payment date, you will need to complete a new direct debit instruction. We'll send you a new council tax bill to confirm your new payment date.

If you'd like to discuss your payment date, or if you are behind with your council tax, please contact us.

Can I change how I choose to pay?

You can choose to pay your monthly instalments by any method we offer. For example, if you currently pay by cash, you can change your mind and decide to pay by direct debit for the rest of the year.

If you choose to pay by direct debit, you will have to complete a form. We will then ask your bank to send us your payments when they are due. If you no longer wish to pay by direct debit, please contact us. You will also need to cancel this instruction with your bank. If you don't tell us you no longer wish to pay by direct debit, we will continue to take payments from your bank.

Where can I pay?
