What is the Cabinet?

The Cabinet is the group which is responsible for making decisions on council services which affect you. It consists of nine councillors including the Leader of the Council.

What does the Cabinet do?

The Cabinet receives reports from the relevant officers and then decides how services are to be provided within the policy framework agreed by the Full Council.

Is the Cabinet open to the public?

The Cabinet is keen to hear from members of the public and you would be encouraged to put forward your point of view, if you wish. You can attend any meeting of the Cabinet and you will be allowed to listen to the majority of the discussions. There are certain times when sensitive information is being discussed which might relate, for instance, to commercial interests, and when this is the case you will be asked to leave.

When is the Cabinet held?

The Cabinet meets every two weeks, usually on a Tuesday at 4.00 p.m. Meetings are usually held in the Council Chamber at Huddersfield Town Hall. If you want to find out where the meeting is being held and what might be on the agenda you can contact us or search the online diary of meetings.

How can I attend?

You can attend any of the meetings by just turning up on the day and you would be welcomed.

Public notices

Outside the main town halls in the Kirklees area, at Batley, Cleckheaton, Dewsbury and Huddersfield you should find a public notice board on which the meetings to be held that week will be advertised.

If you do not see details of a meeting in which you are interested you can contact Scrutiny and Governance to ask for more information.

Decision summaries

After a meeting, a short statement of the decision taken by the councillors is prepared so that the councillors, officers and the public can see what decisions were taken. This is not the formal record of the meeting that forms the minutes but is intended as a bulletin to provide fast information relating to the decision.

How can I obtain the agenda for a Cabinet meeting?

You can search for a copy of the agenda on the web site for any meeting of the council. Alternatively you can request a copy by contacting Scrutiny and Governance. This service will also give you information on the date and place where meetings will be held.

How can I obtain the report for a Cabinet meeting?

If you want a particular report being considered by a Cabinet you can search for a copy of the report on the web site. Alternatively, you can request a copy of that document by contacting Scrutiny and Governance.

How can I obtain the minutes for a Cabinet meeting?

All minutes are available for you to receive a copy when they have been approved as a correct record by the members of that group. You can search for a copy of the minutes on the web site. Alternatively you can request a copy by contacting Scrutiny and Governance.
