Why have I received a Reminder/Final
Notice?
Our records show that you are behind with the payments on your Business Rates bill.
Business Rates must be paid in accordance with the instalments shown on
your bill to avoid recovery action being taken.
- When one instalment is missed a reminder will be issued
- if the amount shown on the reminder is not paid within 7 days, a summons
will be issued
- if the amount shown on the reminder is paid within 7 days, and payments
are kept up to date, no further action will be taken
- if the amount shown on the reminder is paid within 7 days, but subsequent
instalments are missed or late, a second reminder will be issued
- if the amount shown on the second reminder is not paid within 7 days,
a summons will be issued
- if the amount shown on the second reminder is paid within 7 days,
and payments are kept up to date, no further action will be taken
- if the amount shown on the second reminder is paid within 7 days,
but subsequent instalments are missed or late, a final notice will be
issued
- The final notice allows 7 days to pay the full balance due for the
year (it is not enough just to bring the instalments up to date)
- if full balance is not paid in full within 7 days a summons will be
issued
Please note that paying within the month will not always avoid recovery
action, it is important to make payment on the due dates shown on the bill.

Why have you sent me a summons?
You have not paid the amount shown on the reminder/second reminder/final
notice that was sent to you. You have therefore lost the right to pay your
bill by instalments, and a summons has been issued for the balance outstanding
on your account for the year.

Why have I been charged costs?
The costs are to cover the extra expenses that the Council has incurred
as a result of issuing reminders and applying to the Magistrates' Court
for the issuing of a summons for your outstanding account.
What will happen if I don't
pay the amount on the summons?
The Council will apply to the Magistrates' Court for a liability order,
and additional costs will be added to your account.
What is a liability order?
A liability order gives the Council power to collect the debt by any of
the following methods:
- Instruct bailiffs to remove your goods and for those goods to be sold at
public auction to pay off the debt
- Commence bankruptcy proceedings
What if I still don't
pay?
The Council can apply to the Magistrates' Court for you to be committed
to prison for a maximum of 90 days.

but can pay something every week/month, can I do this?
