I am concerned at the number of urban foxes and the possible health effects - can
the Council deal with them?
The fox is not, and never has been, classified as vermin and the Council is under no
obligation to exercise any form of control over these animals.
Foxes are territorial animals and warn off other foxes by scenting their patch using urine
and faeces. Therefore, chemical (smell) deterrents can be effective against foxes. These
deterrents are usually available from large garden centres.
Some people express concern that foxes pose a health hazard to humans. However, they are
not usually aggressive towards people and will wherever possible avoid human contact.
The only serious health hazard posed by a fox is the threat of rabies. Fortunately, Britain
currently remains rabies free and therefore the fox's potential to carry the rabies virus
poses no actual threat to animals or humans at this time.
